1. Yes, I didn't know that the lilies or marigolds were not a good gift for a celebration of 15 years.

2. I'am agree with the customs.

3. Differences:
-Eye contact should be kept to a minimum, but we believe that this is disrespect.

-Our main religion is Catholicism.
-their main religion is Buddhism.

-The official language of Colombia is Spanish.
-The official language of cambodia is Khmer.

- Their government is formed by the king and prime minister.
- Our government is formed by the President, Vice President, President of Congress, President of the Supreme Court.

Similar customs:

- Our basic cereal is the rice, and theirs too.

- Colombia could be called a hierarchical society where people earn the respect due to age and position and the Khmer or Cambodian also have this habit.

- they celebrate the holidays like we do.

- Gifts are not opened when received.

4. I think the Crosscultural Communication is all that will help enhance understanding between members of different cultures in any situation of communication.
For example: business, economics, technology, development, politics.
Comparing from 10 to 20 years over here, our world has changed radically.

I think this is a factor that contributory in the development of our regions, but at the same time may introduce some loss of belief for many years, because we have the freedom to interact with people from other cultures and thus habits that make you like it, leaving our roots.

-With foreigners Cambodians have adopted the western practice of shaking hands like in colombia.
-in cambodia, Gifts are not opened when received as same as in colombia.
-Respect and deference must always be shown to the most senior and oldest person in cambodia and colombia, both.
4A:in the last times the east and westcultures have been conected in a crosscultural comunication. However, changes and advancements in economic relationships, political systems, and technological options began to break down old cultural barriers. Business transformed from individual-country capitalism to global capitalism, and all this had helped to find a better communication between countries and that their cultures come together to share their different customs. ana and tati, (teacher! we did it together because it was kind of difficult)

CROSSCULTURAL COMMUNICATION.

01- I DID NOT KNOW THAT COLOMBIAN PEOPLE ARE INDERECT COMMUNICATORS, IT IS DUE TO HAVE MORE INFORMATION WITHIN BODY LANGUAGE AND THE CONTEX PREFER THAN THE WORDS .I, E.

02- I DONT AGREE IN SOME THINGS , .

THE CHURCH ALSO HAS SOME INFLUENCE IN AREAS SUCH AS EDUCATION AND POLITIC.
I DONT AGREE WITH THEM BECAUSE I CONSIDERE THAT ITS METHOD ABOUT TEACHING IS VERY TRADITIONAL EXCLUSIVE.AND VERY EXPENSIVE AS WELL.ON THE OTHER HAND I DONT LIKE THAT CATHOLIC CHURCH IS IN BISSINESS THAT IS NOT THEM.

03- I THINK THAT IN MY COUNTRY IS VERY DIFFICULT TO BE WELL PAID, BECAUSE HERE SOMETIMES DOESNT MATTER WHAT IS YOUR RANK OR YOUR LEVEL OF EDUCATON THAT YOU HAVE. BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT INEQUALITY.
04- THE MAIN DIFFERENT THAT I FOUND WAS THE RELIGIONS AND BELIEFS.AND WE HAVE LIKE INFLUENCE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND OTHERS.
CUSTOMS ARE VERY DIFFERENTS BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE ARE VERY INFORMALS IN MEETINGS AND GREETINGS. AND THEY HAVE OTHERS CUSTOMS FOR MEETINGS AND GREETINS.WE WOULD HAVE TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE WE COULD BOTHERS THEM.
- BUT BOTH OF THEM RESPECT THE OLDEST PERSON.IT IS SOMETHING SIMILAR.EVEN THOUGH I THINK THAT IS VERY INTERESTING TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS CULTURE.
- I CONSIDERE THAT THEY HAVE MORE DIFFERENTS THAN WE HAVE.

05- PEOPLE EARN RESPECT DUE TO AGE AND POSITION.
06- BUSSINESS IS VERY IMPORTANT BUT BOTH,
07- TIME IS NOT AN ISSUE IN MEETINGS THEY WILL LAST AS LONG AS THEY NEED TO LAST.
- Have the right thoughts.
- Have the right goals.
- Speak the right words.
- Perform the right deeds.
- Earn a living in the right way.
- Make the right effort.
- Be intellectually alert.
- Meditate.
08- I CONSIDERE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE SOME OF THESE TIPS TO LIVE BETTER.
09- PRESIDENTS AND KINGS WILL BE ALWAYS WHOM CAN HAVE THE POWER .
10- IT IS SIMILARS IN EVERY CULTURE WHERE WE LIVE OR TO KNOW.

05- I CONSIDERE THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE CAN KNOW OTHERS CULTURES. SUCH AS POLITIC, FOOD , RELIGIONS, BELIEFS, THEIR SOCIETY, LOCATION, POPULATION , GEOGRAFIC.AND A LOT OF THINGS, CURRENTY.I HAVE ENJOYED A LOT THIS EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT SOME COUNTRY SOMEDAY OR A NEARBY FUTURE.
I THINK THAT WHEN WE STUDY A FOREING LANGUAGE WE HAVE TO KNOW SOME ABOUT CULTURE.

1. I didn’t know that Colombians expect the most senior person, whether at home or at work, to make decisions.’
2. And I’m disagree with that because I think that the senior persons that don’t have voice or vote in neither decision in the Colombian culture , their experience seems don’t be worth.
3.

DIFFERENCES
Their official language is Khmer
Our official language is Spanish

Their religion is Theravada Buddhist, they believe in karma and reincarnation.
Our religion is catholic we believe in the heaven and resurrection

Their hierarchy depends to religion’s position
Our hierarchy depends to the age

Their don’t considerate a birthday a important celebration
We celebrate our birthday with big parties

They never discuss in such social settings in the table
We talk about everything in the table

SIMILAR THINGS

They use a surname to talk with honorific persons like we

They use their hands to greet like we

In Cambodia the Gifts are not opened when received like here

4. Was very interesting I never read anything about culture or customs about Cambodia and although Cambodia is very far from our country we have very similar things. So I’m learning new things with this activity and is very interesting because nobody talk about countries like Cambodia, that has so many problems social, political and economic problems. Is good don’t see always the bad things.

1. Yes, there is surprising information to me about Colombia etiquette. i.e. “Wrapped gifts are not opened when received”. In my family when anybody receives any gift i.e. for birthday, Christmas, or graduation; the gift must be opened and who received the gif must to show pleasure and happiness.

2. Yes, I disagree whit “If you are going to a girls 15th birthday, gold is the usual gift.” I think in the 80s the gold was a usual gift but in this century the young people prefers to receive technology like a gift.

3. Culture
Colombia and Cambodia have different religion. Most Colombians are catholiques, The majority of Cambodians follow Theravada Buddhism.
In Colombia the most important structure of society is the family but the individual is very important for the group of society; whether in Cambodia the most important is the group like a family, neighborhood, and company.
Both countries have hierarchical society, but in Cambodia is more strong the hierarchical structure.
Greetings
In the greetings the Colombia and Cambodia are different but they have a similarity the people refer to people by the honorific title.
Gift giving etiquette
When the people is invited to the home of friends, In Colombia isn’t suitable to give lilies and marigolds, In Cambodia isn’t suitable to give knives.
Personal Opinion:
I think that de different between Colombia and Cambodia is founded by the different religion. The religion decide the human relations, structure of family, government.

4. In this moment f history is very important to know the customs, etiquette, culture of the others countries, because there are more the business international relations and the people have more possibilities of travel around the world. But the peaceful international relations need tolerate people able to understand the other customs.(Luz Estela)

1. Is really surprising the cultura of clombia because the most Colombians to be roman catholics but a few people to be of others religions and the church have historically are importans. Is normal that the Colombians have the surmames maternal and paternal.

Colombia doesn’t have a lot of information of culture and customs but I’m not whit the information that have about were the gift the to girl 15th because not is necesary gift the ring of gold but the gift you can do the wonderful party whit the fiends an family or do a food and a cake for the celebration
3. DIFFERENCES
The religion of Cambodia is Theravada Buddhist an the Colombia is roman catholics.
In Colombia if celebrate the birthdays and Colombians are going to a girls 15th birthaday and Cambodian the birthdays are not big events, Cambodians don’t celebrate the birthdays.
The cambodiansgifts flowers and the Colombians they associate these whit funerals but they liked gift roses

Yes, in the article there are a lot of information interesting. I have listened all kind of things but is new for me the part business meetings where the relationships are so important for example if you want make business; you have to make good friends. Some people don’t important that.
About the gifts in my family when somebody received a gift you have to open and show us. This was new for me in the article.

First: every that information is true but I don't agree with leave a small amount food because I think if you leave food in your plate this going to go to the garbage, it has not sense maybe is a crazy idea but there are a lot of people that would like eat one little of food my family always said that, we never leave food in our plate.

With respect to meeting and greeting in Cambodian people use a bow, in Colombia people shake hands with direct eye contact, about birthdays Cambodian’s people don’t celebrate them, because they don’t used to remember the date, the similar thing, is the wrapped to the gifts.
The color black to the Colombian people represent mourning and the opposite with Cambodian people to they is the color white, generally in Colombia people make the business between a dinner , in Cambodian people Never discuss business in such social settings.
Is important because you can see different between your own country and others, some times we don’t know a lot of things about our costumes and culture and that is the possibility to do it, and if you want to travel is important read interesting things about that country because if you do make a mistake people of that country see you like a impolite person and is not a good idea.
Really I like crossculture is good identified differents and similarities between countries.

Read this text about Colombia and answer the following questions:

1. Is there any surprising information to you about Colombian culture, customs and etiquette? Provide an example.

Yes, for example:
Language in Colombia
It is very surprising, because in Colombia there are approximately 500.000 speakers of American Indian languages, therefore only 1.16% of the population speakers American Indian. In the past everybody were American Indian, they are disappearing.

2. Is there any fact you don't agree with? Why?

Yes, I disagree with:

Hierarchies
* Colombia can be termed a hierarchical society.
* People earn respect due to age and position.
* Older people are naturally perceived as being wise and as a result are afforded great respect. You will always see the oldest person in a group served their food and drinks first.
* With this position also comes responsibility - Colombians expect the most senior person, whether at home or at work, to make decisions.

In Colombia the hierarchy described in this document used to be the standard, but not anymore. The new hierarchy in Colombia is “to have material things, to posses, and to have power”

Now, read this text about Cambodia and answer the next question:

3. Compare culture, customs and etiquette of Colombia and Cambodia. What are the main differences? What are the similarities?

Main differences:
- Most Colombians would consider themselves to be Roman Catholics, most of Cambodians follow Theravada Buddhism.
-Khmer is the official language of Cambodia, in Colombia Spanish is the official language.
-In Cambodia the traditional greeting is a bow combined with a bringing of the hands together at chest level (similar to bringing hands together for prayer). In Colombia Men shake hands with direct eye contact, and women kiss once on the right cheek.
-In Cambodia the hierarchy is given by rank in society, in Colombia the hierarchy is given by age and position.
-In Colombia a girl's 15th birthday is considered an important milestone, Cambodians do not celebrate birthdays.
-Dining etiquette is quite formal in Colombia; in Cambodia Table manners are fairly formal.

Similarities:
-Cambodia the business cards have one side of their card translated into Khmer, in Colombia the business cards have one side of their business card translated into Spanish.
-Cambodians are very indirect communicators, Colombians are ‘indirect communicators' too.
-In Colombia the elderly are important generally revered for their age and experience. In Cambodia the elderly are important too.

Personal Opinion:

4. What do you think about Crosscultural Communication?

Is very interesting because is incredible that exist a lot of cultures and different cultures in the world. Everybody have different customs, therefore is very important to know about the crosscultural communication, to learn about other countries, to learn about their customs, cultures, and etiquettes; because if in Colombia there are customs, in other country these customs can to be an offence. Consequently is important know it for a good communication with other people.

1. Is there any surprising information to you about Colombian culture, customs and ettiquete? Provide an example.
I do not know that if you are going to girls 15th birthday is usual gift gold or that imported alcohol, especially spirits, are very expensive and make excellent gifts. Other surprising are some items in Dining Etiquette as even fruit is cut into pieces with a knife and fork and that it is considered polite to leave a small amount of food on your plate when you have finished eating. In the Business Meetings I do not know that Colombians are termed as 'indirect communicators'.

2. Is there any fact you don't agree with? Why?
I am agree whit everything.

3.Compare culture, customs and ettiquete of Colombia and Cambodia. What are the main differences? What are the similarities?

Main Differences
Official language: The official language of Colombia is Spanish; Khmer is the official language of Cambodia.

Religion: Most Colombians would consider themselves to be Roman Catholics; the majority of Cambodians follow Theravada Buddhism.

Meeting and Greeting: In Colombia men shake hands with direct eye contact; in Cambodia the traditional greeting is a bow combined with a bringing of the hands together at chest level.

Gift Giving Etiquette: In Colombia gifts are given for birthdays and Christmas or the Epiphany, a girl's 15th birthday is considered an important milestone. In Cambodia gifts are usually given at Cambodian New Year. Unlike most other cultures as Colombia, Cambodians do not celebrate birthdays.

Business Meetings: In Colombia there may be an agenda but meetings do not always follow a linear path; in Cambodia meetings do not stick to any schedule or agenda.

Similarities
Hierarchies and society: Colombia can be termed a hierarchical society; Cambodia is a collective society too. In Colombia people earn respect due to age and position. In Cambodia, common hierarchical guidelines are that parents are superior to children, teachers to students.

Meeting & Greeting: In Colombia always refer to people by the appropriate honorific title and their surname; in Cambodia people are addressed with the honorific title "Lok" for a man and "Lok Srey" for a woman followed with the first name or both the first and surname.

Gift Giving Etiquette: No Colombia, no Cambodia wrapped gifts are not opened when received.
Business Meetings: Colombians are termed as 'indirect communicators'. Cambodians are very indirect communicators so some reading between the lines is a necessary skill.

Personal Opinion:
4.What do you think about Crosscultural Communication?

In the contemporary age the communication has advanced and every time we are more immersed in the concept of “global village”, it is possible to know that it happens in any side of the world and to establish economic, political and social links among nations very distant geographically. This has been possible for the Crosscultural Communication because the people of different cultural origins can communicate and they have produced some lineaments that allow this intercultural communication. To know the country costumers represent an important leader for understand the essence of a Nation and its people.
